Hand therapy after a stroke

This month we had the privilege of hearing from Gillian Coetsee and Tamryn Turner as they taught us about hand therapy for patients with cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs).

Strokes are a leading cause of disability worldwide, with more than 80% of stroke patients experiencing some degree of upper limb paresis. Our record webinar attendance was a testament to the importance of this topic.

We learnt about splinting for the neuro hand, including different splint designs, and discovered what modalities and exercises to use to manage flaccidity and spasticity while helping a patient to progress through the stages of recovery.

Participants enjoyed the practical videos demonstrating how to make a dorsal volar splint, and how to carry out various exercises and techniques. They also appreciated the focus on functional recovery and developing client centred therapy goals.
