When you're stuck with a stiff hand
Learn what the Casting Motion to Mobilise Stiffness (CMMS) technique involves and how it can be used to treat stiff hands and correct maladaptive movement patterns.
Johanna Jacobson-Petrov explains the rationale behind the CMMS technique, in which a series of carefully designed Plaster of Paris casts is applied to stiff hands in order to immobilise mobile joints, redirect force to stiff joints and retrain grasp patterns at the motor cortex level. See how this technique can be used for patients with stiff hands that do not respond to traditional therapy!
She provides an introduction on how to assess for maladaptive movement patterns, and how to determine which cast or casts will be most beneficial for each individual patient. She then uses a case study to demonstrate her clinical reasoning process, including cast adjustments, weaning of the cast and the inclusion of other therapy techniques.
